Spring motoring. Over heating is a common problem in summer months

April is the time of year that serves as a reminder for us to think about the condition our vehicles.  Here are a few ideas to help keep your car running at optimal performance for spring and summer motoring. Ensure the car is properly serviced in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. If a service isn’t imminent, make sure you have your car checked over.  Paying close attention to the condition of hoses, making sure the coolant level and mixture is correct, that the belts that drive the alternator and power steering are not loose or cracked, and the brake fluid reservoir level is correct will minimise the risk of a breakdown.  Engine oil – Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on an engine if it is not cared for properly.  Cold starts are among the most severe conditions that engines undergo.  By using a good quality engine oil and maintaining the correct oil level you will prolong the life of your engine. As the weather improves road conditions also change.  More people take to the roads through spring and summer resulting in increased traffic congestion and more stop-and-go town driving.  Another good reason to keep a watchful eye on your engine oil and coolant levels.Tyres – As the weather gets warmer and temperatures rise, tyre pressure will change.  Under-inflated tyres reduce a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by around three or four per cent.  Tyres should be checked monthly for tread depth and to make sure that they are inflated to manufacturers’ recommendations, which can typically be found on the inside of the vehicle door or on a label in the glove box.  Be sure to avoid over-inflating the tyres, as this can lead to premature or irregular tyre wear.Lights – Spring rain can also reduce visibility so it is important to check all vehicle lighting including headlights, taillights, back-up lights, turn indicator lights, parking lights and brake lights.  These lights are important not only because they help you to see, but also serve as a way to help you communicate clearly with other motorists. Windscreen – Check and replace worn wiper blades.  Wiper effectiveness is greatly improved by cleaning the windscreen glass with a cleaner that can remove any residue film.  And don’t forget the inside of the glass. Removing the film on the inside can help reduce moisture build-up.  Also make sure the windscreen washer tank is topped up regularly. Happy motoring, Jeremy
